Jessica Bussert is the Founder/President/CEO at Wave Therapeutics Inc.
Tell us about your company. What inspired you to start it?
Years ago I was taking care of a disabled vet who arrived in my ER suffering from the worst bedsores I had ever seen. I decided that there had to be a better solution to the problem and I founded Wave Therapeutics to help create it.
Who are your cofounders and what makes you a great team?
I’m the sole founder, but I’ve assembled an amazing team to help make this venture a success. We’ve got a board and c-suite filled with women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and 1st generation immigrants, each with incredible business experience behind them.
How is your company making a difference?
60k Americans die from bedsores each year and another 3M are maimed by these horrible injuries. Wave can solve this problem.
What are some of the challenges you have faced?
As a trans female founder, access to funding and resources is always a challenge. I long for a world that takes diversity and inclusion seriously.
What is your biggest win?
We just signed a huge contract with the Veterans Health Administration!
Who is your role model?
My spouse, Sharon. She constantly inspires me to be a more loving and compassionate human being.
What do you wish you had known before starting your company?
Actually, I’m glad I didn’t know! If I had any clue just how hard this would be I might not have taken the leap in the first place!
What is your CEO superpower?
I -never- stop trying. I’m like the improbable offspring of the Terminator and the Energizer Bunny!
